The Northern Flame Snug burns both wood and smokeless coal. For wood, which prefers a flat bed with air flowing over the top, the air controls can completely cut off the primary air under the fire with the left lever, whilst leaving the secondary / tertiary air open with the right lever. To burn smokeless coal, this grate slips out and the permeable, coal grate slips in. The airholes in the coal grate allow the ash to fall through and the air controls allow the primary air to be fully open letting air rush under the fire whilst the secondary / tertiary air is almost fully cut off independently.
